The First Four Rounds of the Draft

An examination of the first 4 rounds of the draft (the first 60 picks) makes for some interesting reading.

For starters the graph below shows that the draft works. The graph shows the average games played by each draftee by number. These figures only include games played at the team each player was originally drafted by, i.e. if they were drafted by Melbourne and played 50 games and then played 100 games at Collingwood then only the first 50 games are represented in this graph.

So who can lay claim to the title of team of the seventies? The decade that brought us punk and disco also saw the emergence of Hawthorn and the Kangaroos as well as past stong performers in Richmond and Carlton. Lets see exactly who wins the golden sideburns for team of the seventies.

The Luck Ladder

Everybody needs a little luck every now and then. Some teams get a little more than others during the season as well. The draw is not perfect and the vagaries of teams going up and down the ladder during the season means that certain teams may play a lot of sides near the bottom of the ladder. This is where luck can come into it.

How well does your team do when letting go of their own players and recruiting/trading players from other AFL clubs? In simple terms we look at how many games your club gives away (by letting players go) and how many games your club picks up (by getting players from other AFL clubs).
